On the 23th August 2008, Faculty Entrepreneurship and Business had invited Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Haji Ameer Ali Mydin, the managing director of Mydin Muhamed Holdings Berhad to be the speaker for the Chairman Lecture Series IV. Mydin is to be known also as Malaysian chain supermarket which sells goods that range from Muslims goods, electronic, electrical appliances, watches, toiletries, household, perfumes & non-alcohol perfumes (minyak attar), costume jewelleries, luggage bags, stationeries, shoes, kitchen wares, car accessories, leather-based goods, cosmetics and health products. They also sell textile products such as apparels and garments. The company’s slogan is why pay more, buy at wholesale price. Dato’ Haji Ameer Ali stressed on the topic of branding and retail industries. I gain a lot of information and knowledge about Mydin and the attitude should be developed in an entrepreneur. Every disaster that happen is an opportunity to earn money, this was reminded by Dato’ Haji Ameer Ali.
Before and during starting a business, our personality and behavior is very important in managing a venture. A successful entrepreneur should have the positive values such as diligent, honesty, thrifty, responsible, high discipline, independence and etc. Branding is an important asset in a business where people being attracted and influenced by it. Branding is also the perception toward products or services by the customers. For example, Mydin has their own branding such as My Rasa, Stylo, Dry first, Jean Miguel and many more. In business, there will always competitors around. As to beat the competitors, we must believe and love what venture we are doing, make sure which field is profitable, choose the field that suit our potential, always use a tagline in a business to be more focus, know the position of business in market, say no to short-cuts ways, brave in facing barriers, balanced life and avoid blaming on others when error occur. We will have to think of ways to live in the competition world such as doing the right promotion, recognize condition where there will be a chance for business and develop the blue ocean strategy. In business, co-operation and understanding between staffs and upper management is also vital for smooth operation. Appreciation toward workers or staffs, good working environment, work together like a family, sharing of knowledge and helping each other are some of the important factors in building and maintaining a business. These are something that is not been taught in the class and is an experience from a real entrepreneur.
